Milking 101

The next couple days are going to be interesting. You probably already know that Anthony and Jonathan do most of the animal chores around here. When they leave, Brandon and Kristalyn are pretty good at taking over. So what happens when they all go away at once? We might have a disaster on our hands! Dad and I had a little "talent test" tonight...You know, who could actually get the milk in the bucket and not take two hours. Dad did great! Me? Let's just say that you would have thought me a professional comedian by the way Jonathan was laughing as he looked on. Dad took the front utters, while I positioned myself in the back, a bit scary! The dreaded thing happened. I was assured by the "experts" that such problem would not occur. Ruby must be annoyed with amateur's. Dad got his job done efficiently while I had to get help from him and Jonny. We finally finished! Thanks guys for patiently spending some time tonight teaching us what to do. When they leave tomorrow morning...Um...Hopefully the work will get done properly?

Mom, Anthony, Jonathan, Kristalyn and Christian are heading out tomorrow for some place in Texas (about four hours away). They will be riding with Tonya Roberts and her three kids who are visiting grandparents. The members of our family are joining them to check out a dairy farm. They will be gone for a couple of days. You always have to be looking for those special times of learning!

Nathan, Katherine and Brandon are heading out to Alabama tonight. They just left, it's around 11:00 p.m. or so. We made a pot of coffee, so Nate could stay awake. The guys are dropping of Katherine off at the Linton's house to help out while they go to work at our Uncle's house. I think a week is what the plan is for their trip.

That's what's new around here...Literally, these plans were finalized sometime this afternoon. Good reminder to be flexible :) I wonder what the rest of us will do...We know to set aside a huge block of time for milking, especially if Dad doesn't make it home in time from work tomorrow night!

    Nikkae,
I'll be praying! How much time did your generous family give you to become a pro at milking?
Oooh, that just sounds so optimistic! Actually, what I meant was "Just how long is everybody gonna be gone?"
Maybe I like the phrasing of the first question better... Oh well, you pick.

I can just picture you and your dad milking the cow. Poor Ruby! No!-- poor Kae! :)

Sounds like you could use some help from your sisters. After all, you and I were quite the team at washing those window blinds, and could milking Ruby be any more difficult or take any longer than that did? :)

    ~Sending much love!!

The boys will probably be home tomorrow night Jen.

Hannah, about it not being any harder than the blinds...more pain(use of small muscles in hands). However I didn't get as wet as we did on those gross shades! Now changing the chicken's water was a different story...Taking one look at me tonight you would have thought I had jumped in the pool! Oh, and did I mention the dead chicken burial? Oh yes, while feeding the horses, I beheld (much to my astonishment) a drowned chicken with bulging eyes in the water troth! No, I didn't mark the grave with a cross. If you could have beheld my face while I was performing this "ceremony", you would have totally seen my "city girl side"! I am getting better...thanks to some brothers who leave me so I can practice:)

Thanks for lending Katherine out! It was really good to chat with her yesterday. I only wish we could have seen all of you!

Oh, grode! But I suppose it was a romantic way to die, for a chicken. ;)

Dirty clothes, sore hands, fishing out deceased poultry... this farm life experience is going to make you one hearty woman!

Jessica, your wish for a chat is mutual! Don't have too much fun without me :) And be sure to give Corrine and that "soon to arrive baby" lots of hugs and kisses for me!

Hmmm...I'm not sure who needs more prayer...you and your milking predicament, or those driving with Nate...

    OH Nikkae,
It sounds like you will learn alot.
I know how it is when brothers leave to serve elsewhere and we have to pick up their chores. :)
I sure hope that Ruby is kind to you and gives you lots of warm milk. ;)
    Love much,
    Anna

    Nikkae,
Looks like you've got yourself a nice-sized support group here! Seriously, I hope that everything went well for you. :) I'm way too much of a city girl! I'll even take an E.R. full of puking, pneumonia, people, problems and no access to running water over your cow milking and chicken burying. Well, almost, anyway. I'm sure that the cows would prefer that I stay in the city, considering my lack of bovine knowledge!

Yes, thanks Jen! I appreciate the support group...even though your words are all I get... Where's the extra hands?
We made it through the whole ordeal alive! Anthony and Jonathan are now back to the grind. I enjoy helping out, but not having full responsibility! What if something goes wrong? Like a drowned chicken!

Ha! Your experience's had me grinning, Kae. :-) You're a trooper! It brought back memories of similar experiences I've had with animals. :-p They make life interesting--right?
    Lots of love,
    ~Sal

    Nikkae,
Unfortunately for you, the extra set of hands belonging to yours truly are busy in the aforementioned E.R. full of puking, pneumonia, etc. When I'm finished there I'll be sure to let you know.:) I'd love to come down south and visit. Maybe I'll even bury a "drownded" chicken, if one is so unfortunante as to choose that way to meet its demise during my stay. :)

Oh Jen, I would love to have you come for a visit...Would you consider staying at our house for a bit? That would be fun. BTW, have fun in your ER class...I actually would enjoy that too.

    Nikkae,
I should be finished up with this class by the middle of May, but it all depends on when my National Registry written test gets scheduled. After that, I would love to come down and stay at your house, if ya'll would put up with a Yankee. :) A very tired, brain-fried Yankee who would love a taste of Texas friendliness after all of these tests are done. :)
Honest, I am having TONS of fun in my class, though the previous paragraph probably won't convince you of that fact. :) I can't remember having such a blast and learning so much at the same time. (no offense, mom) I'm actually going to be sorry to see this end. (maybe)
